The acronym GLP or General Public License has made it into
the conscious mind of every Software developer. It stands for
software that
- Allows Free Redistribution
- Includes Source Code
- Allows modifications and derived work
Software under this license is available on a plethora of
servers and is maintained and improved my thousands of developers
worldwide.
The software is typically very stable due to the many 'testers'
and developers working on it as a 'virtual team'. It is also
inexpensive - free if downloaded from a development site and
available for a nominal charge from distributors that package
the software, manuals, training and support for certain computing
environments.
Examples for Open Source software include the Linux operating
system, Apache web services, MySQL database and much more.
More than 60% of all web hosts worldwide are running the
Apache Web Server today, mostly on the Linux operating system.
